When talking to people about the principles in my book they always tell me what food they eat. It’s a near universal delusion that people believe if we eat nutritious foods, we’ll lose weight. This is not true. If we eat too much ‘good’ food, we still gain weight. I say this repeatedly like talking to a wall. Recently I thought of another way to explain it.
The pancreas determines if we are gaining or losing weight. Its job is to check our blood sugar level. If it’s high, it instructs the body to store the extra energy in fat cells. If it’s low, it instructs the body to get the energy needed from fat cells. So, it is up to our pancreas whether we are gaining or losing weight.
Our digestive system gets energy from whatever we eat. It turns it into sugar and puts it into our bloodstream which our bodies, muscles and organs use for energy. No matter what we eat our digestive system turns it into sugar. There are not tiny particles of the food we ate floating around in our blood stream for use as energy. Just sugar.
Therefore, our pancreas cannot know what we ate. It only knows our blood sugar level. Our pancreas does not know if we just ate a hamburger, fries and shake or a big salad with tea. How could nutrition matter to weight loss when the pancreas decides to store or burn fat without knowing what we ate?
This is a hard sell with those who believe eating 4 oz. of chocolate will make us gain 10 lbs. Some are so removed from reality the obvious is unclear. In my book I’m merely saying we are overweight because we overeat. That it’s not what we eat but how much. But diet liars and emotion tell us that nutrition must be the key. Again, for the umpteenth time, I am not saying nutrition is not important. I am saying it has nothing to do with weight loss.
We are overweight because we eat too much. The problem in this country is we do not know what too much is. What’s normal is far too much! I know many readers are not convinced. My message is we need to learn to eat less. If you follow the three critical steps in my book (or to the right), you can lose weight without understanding or believing any of this. Try it. What do you have to lose?
